The doctor who discovered the omicron variant calls for calm: “The alarm level is premature”

The South African doctor who warned of the new most contagious variant of the coronavirus, Angeline Coetzee, has made a call for calm after the international reaction to the appearance of omicron. “It is a premature alarm”, he assures.

In an interview with Cadena SER, Coetzee assured that all the data on this variant must first be analyzed and that the restrictions on travel and flights no longer serve because the omicron variant “has been around the world for probably weeks.”

The call to calm is also related to the symptoms Since, despite the fact that contagiousness appears to be greater than in other coronavirus mutations, the condition is mild. His patients, he says, only showed symptoms for five to seven days, although many recover without discomfort. How is this variant manifested? “Sore throat, moderate tiredness, and body aches, but no high fevers or uncontrolled pulse”, he assures.

Coetzee calls for the use of masks, as well as the safety distance and the good ventilation. Regarding the vaccines and if they are less effective against omicron, the doctor asks for time. “From what we see at the primary level, among my patients I have the majority of those vaccinated over 60 years of age, one in their thirties and I have not had any vaccinated under 35 years of age,” he detailed.

However, and although it manifests itself more mildly, Coetzee insists on going to the doctor: detecting it as soon as possible will prevent it from spreading and increasing infections. “I never thought it was going to be such a big problem, but it is what it is and It is time to wait so that the mild symptoms do not change. We will know it as time goes by, “he confides.
