The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pousaid this Tuesday that “enough of words of 25 years of negotiation” regarding the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and the mercosur that is being discussed between these blocs and the one who urged them to “agree”.
“Enough of the words of 25 years of negotiation. It is very difficult for me to explain to my adolescent children that we have spent 25 years coming to terms with this world that has changed so much.”, expressed the Uruguayan president during his participation in the summit between the EU and Celac.
He added that he seeslike a good thing” the encouragement to agree between the leaders of Mercosur and the European Union in a world “so interconnected and dizzying” in which work must be done to “restore confidence”.
“Trust generates hope and hope moves the individual to the human being in our world.”, he pointed out.
However, Lacalle Pou He did not miss the opportunity to highlight his country in aspects such as high democratic standards, human development, care for the environment, institutional strength and respect for the law.
“All of this makes us come to these meetings and go to the rest of the world with open arms.“, he claimed.
However, the South American president insisted that from his country they understand that “countries protect themselves” although, in his opinion, he does not share “exacerbated protectionism”.
“We are all going to protect our compatriots, that is what our vocation is about and the reason for which we have been elected. Notwithstanding that, I believe that we have a precious opportunity, in this case speaking from my country and as President of it, in this world that requires us to make quick decisions”, he asserted.
The European Union (EU) and Mercosur reaffirmed during the summit between the community bloc and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), which concludes today in Brussels, their “determination” so that the association agreement they reached in 2019 can be concluded before the end of the year.
“They reaffirmed their determination to work towards the conclusion of the agreement between the EU and Mercosur by the end of 2023, and to resolve all outstanding issues in accordance with the priorities and concerns of each party.”, they stressed, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the European Commission after a meeting between the parties.
