Saudi Arabia and Turkey are seeking a deal to return the children who were taken to Russia, the Financial Times writes, citing four sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, Kyiv and Moscow are compiling lists of children who were transported to Russia after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, as part of a mediation process that has not been previously reported. At the same time, Ukraine and Russia refused to communicate directly on this issue, so Turkey and Saudi Arabia act as mediators in the negotiations.

Also involved in the talks are Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who took part in the Russian-Ukrainian peace talks in Istanbul in March, the two sources said.

Riyadh raised the issue of the return of children from Russia at a meeting in Copenhagen on Ukraine in June. Western countries have welcomed Saudi Arabia’s mediation, a diplomat with knowledge of the talks said.

Recall, on March 17, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova. They are accused of “illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.”
