Mexico identified several varieties of avocados (called avocados in that country) criollos whose pulp can be frozen for export or for the production of oil, among other uses, in addition to having superior qualities to commercial ones, such as hass avocadoreported this Saturday the Secretariat (Ministry) of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).
In a statement, the agency indicated that through the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research (Inifap), Sader’s scientific-technical arm, it carried out a study of 15 types of Creole avocados from the states of Guanajuato and Nayarit “to determine its yield, pulp and oil content, and flavor.”
Preliminary research data “showed that there are Creole materials whose weight is similar to that of hass avocado, which is around 150 to 300 grams. These are the Fuerte and Uriel varieties, with 198 and 161 grams, respectively,” exposed the researcher of the Inifap Bajío Experimental Field, Salvador Guzmán Maldonado.
And he added that the pulp content of some genotypes “It is significantly superior to that of the Hass (66% of the weight, on average)”.
As an example, he gave the Fuerte variety that “contains 91% pulp” due to the small bone it possesses, while Uriel presents a “77% of its weight.”
In addition, there are other materials that can be dedicated to the production of pulp, such as Landin 1 and 2, NNN, Pata de Pichó, Pachis, RLV Elongated and Verde Punteado, which present 70 to 83% pulp, he pointed out.
Regarding the oil content, the Inifap researchers demonstrated that there are Creole materials that present up to 68% oil, called “butter avocados”such as Pachis 2, NNN, RLV Elongated, Pata de Pichón and Lindan 3, a higher percentage considering 18% of the Hass avocado.
The Inifap said that “It has detected that only in Guanajuato there are at least 300 different types of criollo avocado.” However, “Because of the way it spreads, many are thought to come from the same type.”
