More than 21 explosions every hour generates the Ecuadorian volcano Sangay

An average of 21.6 explosions every hour has generated in the last day the sangay volcanoone of the most active Ecuadorwhich maintains a high surface and internal activity, as reported this Saturday by the geophysical institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School.

A total of 520 explosions have been recorded in the last 24 hours in this colossus, the southernmost in Ecuador, according to the daily report on the situation of this volcano issued by the IG.

At night and when the atmospheric conditions have allowed it, an incandescent glow has been observed in the Sangay crater, which has spewed puffs of gases and ash, like clouds that have risen to about 1,500 meters above the summit, the source explained. .

El Sangay, 5,230 meters above sea level, is located in the Amazonian province of Morona Santiago (central east), and its name comes from the Kichwa (Quichua) voice. “samkay”, which translates as “scare away” either “terrorize”although it could also come from the word of the Shuar ethnic group “shanga”, which is interpreted as “kind”.

Another of the volcanoes monitored by the IG is Reventador, located in the Amazon province of Sucumbíos (northeast), also in an Andean branch that flows into that jungle and has been in an eruptive pulse since 2002.

El Reventador, which presents a moderate to high activity, generated in the last 24 hours about 30 small explosions, 10 earthquakes of “long period” due to the internal movement of fluids, and 15 episodes of tremors (slight and constant tremors) due to the expulsion of gases and ash.

The expulsion of gases and ash has formed clouds that have risen to an altitude of about 1,000 meters and that due to the direction of the wind have been directed towards the southwest, added the IG.

El Reventador, 3,560 meters above sea level, forms a row of volcanoes in an Amazonian mountainous area close to the Andean mountain range, next to the Sugar Loaf, Sumaco and Puyo Cones.

For its part, Cotopaxi, the second highest mountain in Ecuador located about 45 kilometers south of Quito, registered this Saturday 4 episodes of emission tremors, 21 earthquakes of “long period” and two slight vulcano-tectonic tremors, related to the fracture of rocks inside the volcanic edifice.

The activity of Cotopaxi, 5,987 meters above sea level, has generated concern since it began its last pulse last October; however, in recent days that condition has subsided considerably.

The IG maintains close surveillance of Cotopaxi, located in the Andean province of the same name, due to the danger it poses to the populations settled in its area of influence.
