Thousands of people demonstrated this Friday in Pakistan to protest against the burning of a copy of the holy Quran in Sweden last week, an act considered blasphemy and which has drawn international condemnation. In the case of Pakistan, the day was observed as the Yaum-e-Taqaddus Quran (Day of the Holiness of the Koran) by order of the Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who also called for a national demonstration to defend the Islamic holy scripture and protest against its desecration in Sweden.
Other protests were also called by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the formation of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the country’s main political group.
Protests took place in almost every major city in the country, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar and others, with protesters carrying copies of the Quran and reiterating their commitment to protect the sanctity of the Islamic book.
The protesters also called for a boycott of products made in SwedenThere is its ban in the country by the Pakistani government. In Islamabad, lawyers protested in front of the Supreme Court, copies of the Koran in their hands, while other demonstrations took place outside mosques after Friday prayers.
The prime minister participated the day before in a joint session of Parliament with the aim of designing a national action plan on the incident in Sweden and called on all nations to contain Islamophobia and religious prejudice.
On June 28, the first day of the Eid al Adha celebration, an individual from Iraqi origin burned a copy of the Koran in Stockholm in an act attended by some 200 people, with a strong police presence as it coincided with the Muslim sacrifice festival and without serious incidents taking place.
