– Can we imagine the European Union without Ukraine, without Moldova? Is this part of Europe to be under the influence of Russia or China? It’s impossible! – this is how the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for the urgent enlargement of the EU.

The President of the European Commission, on Monday, after the meeting of the Commissioners and the Spanish government, which took place in Madrid, spoke on the future of the EU. She stated that it was extremely important for the community to take up the issue of enlargement to countries such as Ukraine and Moldova as soon as possible. This is to ensure that they do not fall into the sphere of influence of Russia and China.

– she said.

“So the direction of change is clear. And that’s why we need to start thinking now about how to make these countries part of the European Union” – she added. Von der Leyen said the enlargement issue had to be resolved “as soon as possible because the whole process will be lengthy”.

Ursula von der Leyen on billions for Ukraine: Support must be reliable

The President of the European Commission also commented on the support for Ukraine in the fight against Russia. “We must double our support for Ukraine. It’s been almost 500 days since Russia’s brutal invasion,” von der Leyen said, praising the resistance of the Ukrainian people. “Now it is our duty to match this perseverance. Financial support should be reliable and regular,” she added, recalling that the Commission is proposing to allocate EUR 50 billion for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

EU officials estimate that the EU institutions and the 27 member states have so far provided Ukraine with the equivalent of around €75 billion in arms, ammunition and various types of material aid.
