UNESCO will evaluate Valparaíso in September, after 20 years as a World Heritage Site

The Unesco will review in September the state of conservation of the historic center of Valparaisodeteriorated due to the lack of maintenance of numerous buildings emblematic, revealed the aforementioned institution on the eve of this Sunday marking the 20th anniversary of its declaration as World Heritage.

According to officials from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), the evaluation will be carried out at the next session of the World Heritage Committee to be held in Saudi Arabia, between 10 and 25 September, based on background information collected on the ground by experts and previous visits.

“Valparaíso has faced significant challenges in recent years, including real estate pressure and a lack of funds to renovate and maintain old buildings, which are often homes, and the covid-19 pandemic has amplified those difficulties”explained Unesco.

Several experts from the UN body are currently analyzing the state of conservation of the port city, whose conclusions will be published this month and will serve as the basis for the committee’s work.

The previous conclusions of these experts, as detailed by Unesco, will also include recommendations for possible decisions to be taken in September within the World Heritage Committee.

Integrate the waterfront into the city

The current state of a part of Valparaíso, with abandoned buildings and high crime rates, led Unesco last year to deploy an advisory mission on the ground to find solutions to the state of deterioration, which fanned the specter of a possible exit from the port city on the list of World Heritage Sites.

After that visit, the entity published a series of recommendations, such as urgent corrective measures to recover public space, greater involvement of the central government and the creation of a council to coordinate different administrations and civil and neighborhood organizations, which has already been launched with the leadership of the municipality

“Unesco is determined to continue with the alliance work so that the different actors can implement all the recommendations of the advisory mission and that the historic center of Valparaíso has the best conservation conditions”, reiterated the world organization.

The last report of the State of Chile for Unesco on the heritage of Valparaíso concluded that, among other measures, they are advancing the installation of new public services in the historic center to make it more attractive to private investment, as well as the creation by 2025 of a large park on the waterfront of the city.
