the australian miner bhp will invest US$79 million for the exploration and development of the Filo del Sol copper and silver project, in the northern Argentine province of San Juan, official sources reported on Tuesday.
The disbursement plan was presented by company executives at a meeting in Buenos Aires with the Argentine Economy Minister and presidential candidate, Sergio Massa, and the Mining Secretary, Fernanda Avila.
The Filo del Sol project is located in the Argentine province of San Juan (northwest), 140 kilometers from the Chilean city of Copiapó.
The announcement of bhp implies the return of the company to Argentina, where it operated until 2003, when it sold its share in the Bajo La Alumbrera copper and gold project, in the province of Catamarca (northwest).
During the meeting with the directors of bhpMassa stressed that mining is “a central theme” of the agenda for the coming years in Argentina, and ratified that the Government of his country is working to improve the conditions of the sector and give it “stability and certainty” in terms of investments.
Argentina has 161 mining projects, of which 21 are operational and 8 in an advanced construction stage.
