The left-wing deputy and candidate, Gabriel Boric, is the favorite to beat the far-right lawyer José Antonio Kast in the second round of the presidential election in Chile on December 19, according to polls released this Sunday.
Kast, 55, a representative of the far-right Republican Party, won a close first round of elections on November 21 with 27.9% of the vote, and will contest the ballot with Boric, a 35-year-old who obtained 25.8%.
But in the first polls for the second round, the leftist candidate achieved greater support: 40.4% of those consulted gave their support to Boric, while 24.5% to Kast, according to the study by Pulso Ciudadano, published by the channel13 .
Meanwhile, the newspaper El Mercurio published a survey conducted by the specialized firm Black and White with narrower differences: Boric obtained 44% of the support while Kast 41%.
“It is a very close competition, they are very close. Marginally, millimetrically, Boric would be won “said Paola Assael, an economist at the Catholic University and representative of Black And White.
Meanwhile, the percentage of undecided is around 15.6% according to the polls, while the people who say they will abstain from voting in the second round reach up to 16%.
About 15 million people are qualified to vote in the second round of Chile.
