Cyclone in Brazil: death toll rises to 13

The number of deaths as a result of the passage of a extratropical cyclone for the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (south) rose this Sunday to thirteen, while searches continue for four missing persons in the region.

The number of disappeared reached twenty on Saturday, but it has been reduced in the last hours after the Brazilian authorities located several of them, according to the latest Civil Defense bulletin.

This Sunday, rescue teams found the lifeless bodies of two people in the city of Caraáwhere they are still trying to locate the four confirmed missing so far.

Among the fatalities from the cyclone is a four-month-old baby who died of suffocation in the municipality of Sao Sebastiao do Caí and that he was unable to receive emergency services because the place where he was located was isolated by the floods.

Nearly 4,500 people have had to be evacuated from their homes in around 40 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, a state bordering Uruguay and Argentina, which have been affected by the strong storm.

He cyclone pass along the coast of this region has left a trail of destruction, causing landslides, flooding, power outages in thousands of homes, and extensive damage to roads and bridges.

The Brazilian Army has mobilized to support the rescue efforts in some of the hardest-hit cities, such as Sao Leopoldo, where some neighborhoods have been left incommunicado due to the high level of water.

“Our main objective, at this moment, is to protect and save human lives. Rescue people who are isolated, locate the disappeared and give all our support to the families,” Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite told reporters.

Leite flew over the most affected areas the day before in the company of the ministers Paulo Pimenta, from the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency, and Antônio Waldez Góes, from Integration and Regional Development.

Both ministers ratified President Lula’s commitment to provide “full support” and “give a quick response” to the municipalities affected by the cyclone, which was accompanied by heavy rains in a short period of time and winds of more than 80 kilometers per hour.
