She was one step away from the title of the most beautiful woman in the world, starring in films with Marlon Brando and the status of a world-famous star. She gave up her career and fame for love. Today, hardly anyone remembers the colorful story of Alicja Bobrowska.
She dreamed of an actress career. She became Miss Polonia, thanks to the encouragement of her parents
Alicja Bobrowska was born in Włodzimierz Wołyński (today part of Ukraine) on January 8, 1936. After the outbreak of World War II, her family had to move to completely different cities many times. Around 1945 they settled in Gdańsk. Alicja graduated from high school there and went to Cracow to study. She has always wanted to become an actress, which is why she started studying at the State Higher School of Theater at the Department of Puppetry.
To earn a scholarship, she worked as a model in Krakowskie Domy Towarowe. She also took part in a beauty contest organized as part of the juwenalia. The performance earned her the title of “The Nicest Student”. She was persuaded to sign up for the Miss Polonia election by her parents. Eleven other women participated in the competition. Alicja, as she claims, stood out thanks to the knowledge acquired during her studies. – I think that my victory was decided by the ease, stage experience that I acquired during my studies, as well as humanistic knowledge. – she said during an interview for – Thanks to her, I defeated more beautiful and shapely rivals than myself and won the crown – she emphasized.
She flew to the USA for the Miss Universe pageant. She came back for love
The title of the most beautiful Polish woman did not change much in Bobrowska’s professional life. It wasn’t until a year later that she decided to continue her adventure with modeling. She decided to take part in the elections. However, getting to the United States turned out to be a big problem. Her visa application was rejected, and her attempts to get to the USA with the band Wagabunda failed miserably. She only has one option left. – I came up with a crazy idea to send a telegram to Prime Minister Cyrankiewicz, in which I will give my word that I will proudly present our country abroad and that I will return to Poland. The model was hiding her lack of knowledge of English, but the star did not let go. In the end, his efforts yielded no effect. Miss Polonia returned to the country, where her family and her fiancé, Stanisław Zaczyk, were waiting for her.
The couple got married shortly after the woman returned to her homeland. A year later, their only son Maciej appeared in the world. The couple and their child moved to Warsaw. Bobrowska got a job there at the National Theatre, but she didn’t make a big deal. She also played episodic roles, incl. in Stanisław Bareja’s Marriage of Convenience, or in Paris-Warsaw Without a Visa. Bobrowska and Zaczyk seemed to be an ideal marriage. The more surprising was their separation, which took place as soon as their son grew up. They never spoke about it publicly. They also did not give the reasons why they ended the relationship.
The woman packed one suitcase and left for the USA, where she wanted to visit old friends. She stayed permanently and devoted herself to nursing work. After retirement, she found a new passion – creating three-dimensional art. Her works have been exhibited in numerous museums in California, as well as Chicago and New York. Today he is 87 years old and lives in the United States. She lives near Paramount Pictures, where she refused Marlon Brando’s proposal years ago.
