The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbockdefined to Latin America as a “natural partner of Europe” before embarking on a journey that will take her to Brazil, Colombia and Panama.
“Not even an ocean can separate us because Latin America and Europe are natural partners. There is a lot that unites us. We live in democracies, we are close culturally and we fight for an international system based on rules and on Human rights”Baerbock said in a statement.
“This is valid both for Colombia and Panama and for Brazil, our strategic partner who will have the next presidency of the G20″he added.
Baerbock pointed out that the government of President Luiz Inazio Lula da Silva wants to make its contribution to solutions to the most pressing global challenges.
“In this we are united by the firm belief that there can only be prosperity if freedom and peace prevail, although occasionally, as in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, we have different perspectives”assured the head of German diplomacy.
Baerbock stressed that “Without Latin America, the climate crisis cannot be alleviated”and alluded to the problem of deforestation in the Amazon through fires and logging.
“That affects us all, if the trees continue to fall, the entire ecosystem collapses. That is why we share President Lula’s ambition to offer perspectives to those who live next to the jungle, not against the jungle but with it.”he explained.
Baerbock also appreciated that Brazil produces close to 90 percent of its energy with renewable sources and he said green oxygen has great potential throughout the continent.
The German minister also said that the huge ships that cross the Panama Canal remind that Latin America is potentially a giant of the world economy.
“Secure supply chains, green energy, less dependence on raw materials. With the Russian war of aggression we are rapidly rearranging the threads of our global relations.”said.
