Bovril, the Argentine city that requires the use of the Mercosur flag

Bovril, a small town in Entre Ríos (east of Argentina), is the first city of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) to decree the mandatory use of the bloc’s flag in all events organized by the municipality and in municipal buildings

As reported by the Austral University on Monday, the flag of the bloc made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay will be displayed in Bovril -which is characterized by the development of agricultural production- along with the national, provincial and municipal banners.

The Mercosur flag -which, in addition to the acronym, has four stars- was created by decision 17/02 of the Common Market Council and incorporated into Argentine law by Law 26,144 of 2006.

Meanwhile, Bovril established the obligation by ordinance 1082/23, of last April 25, promulgated by decree 59/23.

In addition to the use of the flag around the municipality of Bovril, the regulation invites all institutions, official bodies and state and private educational establishments at all levels in the municipal territory to fly the Mercosur flag during events, conferences or formal events they celebrate.

With a history in the beef industry, the municipality details on its website that it owes its name to the now-defunct British company Bovril Limited, which between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century built a global economic empire on the site for the industrialization of beef. beef and its derivatives and who was the author of the founding layout of the city.

Bovril Limited’s products -founded in 1889 by Scotsman John Lawson Johnston and which manufactured a world-renowned beef extract- were packaged in Argentina and shipped to England for consumption.

In 1911 the train tracks reached the area that would become Bovril and in 1914, one year after the founding of the town, the passenger station was set up, which later became a collection center for products to be sold.

The railway became the axis of the economic activity of the town, made up of Spanish, Italian, Arab and German immigrants, among others.

The company was sold in 1970 to the British Company Cavenham, which then sold the slaughterhouse in 1973 to a society of cattle breeders from the province of Santa Fe and then passed on to the provincial government in 1984 until it was privatized in 1991.

Bovril’s initiative seeks to provide a sense of citizen belonging to Mercosur, which is added to the mandatory use of unified car and motorcycle license plates in the four countries.

“These elements seek to bring the regional bloc closer to the citizenry and generate a sense of identification and participation”explained Austral University professor Alejandro Perotti in the statement.
