Electronic passport scanning gates are working again at UK airports after a technical failure that left them inoperative the day before was resolved, a spokeswoman for the UK Home Office has reported.
“We can confirm that all the ‘e-Gates’ (as they are called in English) are now working normally”the source said.
The ministry, responsible for the Border Force in charge of immigration controls, thanks the travelers who were affected for “their patience” as well as their effort to the staff who worked to solve the problem.
The fall of the electronic gates from Friday afternoon until last night caused Saturday long queues at airports like London’s Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted to pass passport control, which had to be checked manually by immigration agents.
According to Lucy Morton, a spokeswoman for the Immigration Services Union, normally between 60% and 80% of passengers arriving in the UK usually pass through these electronic gates, which operate with facial recognition technology.
This passport scanning system can be used by British and European Union citizens over the age of 12 and from other countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan and New Zealand.
