Turkey’s outgoing president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, claimed the second round of presidential elections on Sunday.

“Our nation has entrusted us with the responsibility of running the country for the next five years,” Erdogan told his supporters from the roof of a bus in his home district of Istanbul.

“We will keep all our promises,” said the head of state, who has been in power for 20 years, assuring that “every election is a rebirth”.

“These elections have shown that no one can attack the achievements of this nation,” he continued.

According to the official Turkish bureau Anadolu, Erdogan won 52.1% of the vote, compared to 47.9% for his opponent, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, after the recount of nearly 99% of the vote.
