Egypt: Reveal ancient workshops and tombs discovered in pharaonic necropolis

The Egyptian authorities antiquities managers revealed on Saturday workshops and graves which, they say, were recently discovered in a pharaonic necropolis located on the outskirts of the capital Cairo.

The spaces were discovered in the extensive Saqqara necropolis, which is part of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Mostafa WaziriSecretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquitiessaid that the workshops had been used to mummify humans and sacred animals. They date back to the Pharaonic Dynasty XXX (380 BC to 343 BC) and the Ptolemaic period (305 BC to 30 BC).

Inside the workshops, archaeologists They found clay vessels and other objects that were apparently used in the mummificationas well as ritual vessels, Waziri explained.

The tombs, meanwhile, corresponded to a high-ranking official from the Old Kingdom and a priest from the New Kingdom, according to Sabri Farag, director of the Saqqara archaeological site.

In recent years, the Egyptian government has heavily promoted new archaeological finds to the media and international diplomats. He hopes such discoveries will help attract more tourists to the country to revive an industry that has suffered. because of the political turmoil following the 2011 uprising.
