UK to ban foreign students from bringing their families, with one exception

He United Kingdom It will prohibit foreign students from bringing their dependent family members with them from January 2024, as a measure to control immigration, although the measure excludes those who are studying certain postgraduate studies, British Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced Tuesday.

I am pleased to announce a package of measures to help achieve our goal of reducing net migration, while supporting the Government’s priority of growing the economy.“, said braverman in a parliamentary statement.

Specifically, the measures include eliminating the right of foreign students to bring dependents –unless they are in postgraduate courses designated as research programs– and put an end to the possibility that they change their status from student to that of worker before completing their training.

Likewise, the minister informed that the Government will take measures against “unscrupulous educational agents who may be supporting inappropriate solicitations to sell immigration, not education”, referring to cases in which these applications function as screens to obtain a visa to enter the country.

To do this, as explained by the head of the Interior, the Government will improve communication on immigration rules for international students.

According to the Government, in 2022 some 136,000 visas were granted to dependents of students, eight times more than the 16,000 in 2019.

The minister has set herself the goal of reducing the number of both legal and undocumented immigrants, given the increase in small boats that cross the English Channel from France to England.

It is estimated that, so far this year, more than 5,000 migrants have crossed the waters of the Canal.
