FAO asks to protect bees for being “vital” for the future of ecosystems

Bees play a “vital role“in the survival of ecosystems and the increase in biodiversity, which is why it is necessary”promote actions that protect pollinators and their habitats”, urged the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), which celebrates its World Day tomorrow, May 20.

These tiny creatures play a vital role in the survival of our ecosystems, ensuring with their meticulous work the reproduction of many plants, supporting the regeneration of forests and improving the quantity and quality of agricultural production.”, explained the United Nations agency.

Not surprisingly, 75% of food crops depend on pollination from insects such as bees, a figure that rises to 90% in the case of wild flowering plants.

However, the population of bees and other essential pollinators has been in constant decline for decades due to increasing intensive agricultural production in monoculture systems and the use “excessive” of pesticides.

These practices, which seek to make food production more profitable, reduce bees’ access to food and nesting sites, while exposing them to “Harmful chemicals that weaken your immune system”, recalled the FAO in a statement.

For this reason, the organization of the UN asked “promote actions that protect pollinators and their habitats” by adopting sustainable agricultural practices, reducing the use of insecticides and creating habitats for species such as bees near growing areas.

On the occasion of World Bee Day, the FAO hosts this Friday a round table in which experts will address the importance of preserving the biodiversity of bees, their contribution to food production and the threats that these insects face.
