Treasury chief John Glen said the government’s priority at the time was to ensure that the event “went smoothly” and with “the appropriate level of dignity, while ensuring the safety of the public at all times.”

Elizabeth II had assumed the throne on February 6, 1952, on the death of her father, King George VI. After the queen’s death, her eldest son assumed the throne as Carlos III.

The king’s coronation took place on the 6th at Westminster Abbey, the same Anglican temple where Elizabeth II was also crowned in June 1953.
