Lenín Moreno calls for unity after “cross death” so that Correísmo does not win elections

Ecuadorian ex-president Lenin Moreno (2017-2021) requested this Wednesday unity, humility and detachment after the current president, the conservative William Lassohas decreed the “cross death”which implies the dissolution of the National Assembly (Parliament) and the advancement of general elections.

In a message on social networks, Moreno, who works in Asunción as commissioner of the Organization of American States (OAS) for Disability Issues, assured that “it’s citizen time” and asked “cold head” so that the electoral triumph of correísmo in the last local elections on February 5 is not repeated.

The former president, who distanced himself from correísmo when he came to power after having been vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), considered that it is necessary to “understand the moment, privilege what is truly important: freedom, democracy, institutionality, respect and citizen well-being”.

“This requires (it is a condition, not an option): unity, organization, synchronicity and, above all, humility and detachment. We have it clear or we repeat what happened in February ”, apostilled

Moreno also asserted that “There is no possibility of being equidistant and impartial.”

“The moment they appear we will know that they are playing on the other side. ‘Between warriors and lions there are no pacts’”he concluded.

Lasso decreed the “cross death” in the midst of the political trial of censorship undertaken by the opposition, which has a majority in the National Assembly and that he is accused of an alleged crime of embezzlement (embezzlement) in a maritime oil transport contract.

The president resorted to this figure contemplated in the 2008 Constitution given the uncertainty of having enough votes to save the motion of censure in Parliament promoted by Correísmo and the conservative Social Christian Party, together with legislators from the Pachakutik indigenous movement and from the Left. Democrática (ID), in addition to other independents.

The opposition launched the political trial at the moment of Lasso’s greatest weakness in his almost two-year term, after the heavy defeat suffered in the electoral appointment of February 5, where the Government lost a referendum to apply reforms to the Constitution and In turn, Correísmo was the winner in the local elections.

Without an Assembly in office, Lasso will govern by decree until his successor takes office, who must be elected in the new general elections called by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
