Assemblyman maintains that there is no cause to decree “cross death” in Ecuador

Assemblyman Esteban Torres, one of the interpellants in the political trial of censorship of the Ecuadorian head of state, William LassoI consider that “There is no cause whatsoever” to decree the dissolution of the National Assembly, as the Executive has done this Wednesday.

He indicated that the relevance of this decree must be analyzed “judicially and constitutionally and wait for a decision that, in some way, can make this decision firm and have the call for elections immediately, or ignore the validity of that decree and continue with the functions of the Assembly”.

Torres stressed on Teleamazonas television that “There is no cause whatsoever” to apply the call “cross death”, invoked by Lasso by “serious internal and political upheaval”.

“Right now there is no social and political upheaval. There is no national congestion of the streets at this time, or a paralysis of public services, that does not exist and hopefully it will not happen, that is why there is no reason for a decree ”, indicated Torres, who last Sunday was elected second vice president of Parliament.

On his side, Fernando Villavicencio, defined himself this Wednesday as “A very happy former assemblyman.”

Dozens of soldiers and police have surrounded the National Assembly of Ecuador, an institution dissolved this Wednesday, when the second day of debate was scheduled in the political trial of censorship against the head of state, accused of alleged embezzlement.

According to the opposition, Lasso committed an alleged embezzlement by learning of alleged irregularities in a contract signed by the state company Flota Petrolera del Ecuador (Flopec) and the private firm Amazonas Tanker and not having acted to prevent further damage to the State.

Instead, the president’s defense maintains that the contracts were signed under the previous administration of the former president. Lenin Moreno (2017-2021) and that under Lasso’s mandate a review was requested from the Comptroller’s Office (Court of Accounts) to renew them under the conditions and observations made by that body.

Villavicencio opined on Ecuavisa television that Lasso did have the option of overcoming the impeachment trial, but his management would have been very complicated in the two years remaining in his mandate, in which the opposition could corner him.

Lasso added that the destabilizing project “It rose to a new level with the blocking of the legislative initiatives presented by the Executive” and “All the efforts of the legislature are focused on destabilizing the Government with an unfounded political trial.”

“They promote an alleged crime of embezzlement by omission that does not exist in our legislation with which they want to ensure that I am politically responsible for not having acted in an alleged case of corruption,” said about the accusation of the opposition.
