Lula condemns the invasion of Russia in a joint statement with Portugal

The final declaration of the XIII Portuguese-Brazilian summit held today in Lisbon includes a joint condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and stresses the need to promote a “just and lasting peace”.

The text maintains that both heads of government, the Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the Portuguese António Costa, “deplore the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity by Russia and the annexation of parts of its territory as violations of international law.”

They also regret the “loss of human life and destruction of civilian infrastructure, as well as the immense human suffering and increased vulnerability of the world economy caused by the war.”

In addition, they express their “concern with the global effects of the conflict on food and energy security, especially in the poorest regions of the planet” and underline the “need to promote a just and lasting peace”.

The differences between Brazil and Portugal over the war against Ukraine have been planned today during Lula’s visit to Lisbon.

The Brazilian is committed to seeking a peace dialogue involving countries trusted by the actors in the conflict.

A vision that contrasts with that of the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, for whom the way out of the war involves the withdrawal of Russia and Ukraine’s right to defense.

“Portugal is in solidarity with the NATO and the EU and thinks that it is not a fair situation not to allow Ukraine to defend itself and try to recover territory that was invaded with the violation of its territorial integrity”Rebelo said today.

THE SUMMIT OF RECONCILIATION

The XIII Portuguese-Brazilian summit, the first since 2016, coincides with a moment of commercial strength between the two countries. Brazil is the first destination for Portuguese investment abroad and is, at the same time, the second largest investor in Portugal outside the EU.

The meeting concluded with more than a dozen agreements that reach the areas of Culture, Education, Health, Transportation, Science and Technology, Economy and even space cooperation.

In addition, the final declaration includes a mention of the firm commitment of Brazil and Portugal for a “quick conclusion” of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur “review the fiscal framework of direct investment at the bilateral level to avoid double taxation”.

Lula arrived in Lisbon on Friday accompanied by a large delegation of ministers to advance on issues of common interest at a time when Brazil seeks to strengthen ties with Portugal, where more than 250,000 Brazilians reside, the largest foreign community in the European country.

Several of the agreements aim precisely to help Brazilians residing in Portugal, such as the recognition of academic training and the validation of higher education degrees.

In addition, protocols for audiovisual co-production and agreements in favor of the joint production of vaccines and public health.

Lula arrived in Lisbon on Friday for an official visit that includes a business forum on Monday, and which will conclude on Tuesday with an act in Parliament.
