Earth Day: create weather clocks to warn of warming

Hundreds of young people and adults created this Saturday in New Delhi (India) weather clocks, which mark the countdown of the time remaining for the global warming exceed the limit of 1.5°C, with which to warn of the crisis before it is too late: six years and ninety days.

“We are running out of time, and we have to start taking action”said Chetan Solanki, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technologies (IIT) of Bombay and promoter of an event on the occasion of today’s Earth day which had the backing of the Indian Government.

“Today is a day to remember Mother Nature and commit ourselves to take care of her”he said, while calling for reducing global emissions and accelerating the transition towards sources of renewable energy like the sun

These digital clockswhich young students toiled to assemble from a stadium in the capital, are a way of visualizing the time remaining until temperatures rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, a date calculated based on global data from emissions.

Climate scientists point out that past this point of no return, the world will be doomed to the worst consequences of the climate crisis with hardly any room to stop the warming.

The increase in temperatures not only puts people’s health at risk, with heat waves increasingly frequent and extreme temperatures such as those that this week killed 13 attendees at a government event in the western state of Maharashtra.

The serious changes in temperatures also affect the economy of the Indiaby spoiling tons of crops.

In addition, the World Weather Attribution initiative, which brings together weather experts from various institutions around the world, warned last year that the climate crisis multiplies by 30 the arrival of early heat in territories such as the India and Pakistan.
