In the midst of tensions, Chile begins counting presidential votes with delay in several locations in the country

The day registered a high participation among the 15 million citizens of a population of 19 million inhabitants.

Chile began this Sunday the counting of votes in the presidential elections most decisive and uncertain in its recent history, pending the closure of some of the more than 2,800 premises that still register lines and that by law must remain open while there are voters inside.

More than 15 million citizens were called to vote from 08.00 local time (11.00 GMT) to 18.00 local time (21.00 GMT) to elect the successor of the current president, the Conservative Sebastian Piñera, and totally renew the Chamber of Deputies and partially the Senate.

“They closed the door in our faces,” claimed a young man in full transmission of Mega Noticias. In towns like Maipú and Puente Alto, groups of citizens were part of tense moments together with the uniformed and organizers of the polls, since when they went to their polling place, some of these were already closed while Hundreds of people stood outside waiting to cast their vote.

According to the latest polls, none of the seven presidential candidates would prevail in the first round and they would go on to vote on December 19 the left-wing deputy Gabriel Boric and the far-right José Antonio Kast, although experts agree that these are the most open elections in recent decades and all scenarios are possible.
