WHO warns of 500,000 deaths without urgent measures in Europe

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed great concern about the rise in Covid-19 cases in Europe and has warned of the possible death of some 500,000 people by March 2022 if there are no urgent measures, the organization’s regional director, Hans Kluge, told the BBC on Saturday.

The manager indicated that the introduction of the use of masks can help immediately, after countries such as Germany and Austria recorded a strong increase in infections.

According to Kluge, the winter, the lack of vaccination and the presence of the delta variant of Covid, very contagious, are the factors of this rebound in coronavirus cases in Europe, which is why he called for public health measures and that more people get vaccinated .

“Covid-19 is once again the number one cause of death in our region,” Kluge told the BBC, adding that “we know what we need to do” to combat this virus.

In his opinion, the obligation to get vaccinated should be something that is adopted as a “last resort”, since measures such as the use of the Covid passport can be taken beforehand.

The director of Europe of the WHO pointed out that these decisions do not imply a restriction of freedom, but are “a tool to maintain our individual freedom.”

Austria has become the first European country to announce mandatory vaccination by February 2022, while countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia have communicated new restrictions for people who are not immunized.
