In the fight against tax evasion in purchases from Chinese stores, Brazil tests a solution

The Brazilian government is preparing measures to prevent tax evasion of products purchased abroad through electronic commerce platforms, a measure that mainly targets Chinese and Southeast Asian stores, as confirmed by the Treasury.

The economic team of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wants to put an end to a rule that exempted from taxes the shipment of goods between individuals of less than 50 dollars.

The measure would affect e-commerce giants such as the Asian AliExpress, Shein either Shopeequestioned by Brazilian merchant associations for allegedly unfair competition, according to the Brazilian press.

The Treasury remarked in a note that the current rule that benefits small value exchanges between individuals “it is only serving for widespread fraud” on shipments arriving in Brazil.

This benefit is only for shipments from a natural person to a natural person, but it has been widely used fraudulently for sales made by foreign companies.”, indicated the Treasury.

President Lula already mentioned the matter on March 21, when, in an interview with the Brasil 247 channel, he denounced that “the importation of products that do not pay any tax is growing”and pointed to companies of Chinese origin.

I want an extraordinary relationship with the Chinese, the best possible relationship, but we can’t accept people selling things here without paying taxes, we have to be serious about it.”, pointed out the president, who this Wednesday arrives in the Asian giant for an important state visit with a marked economic accent.

To put an end to these irregularities, the Government intends to launch “tools” for one “effective control” through the requirement of “complete and anticipated import declarations” in which the parties are identified.

Consumers will be the beneficiaries of these measures”, well “with the advance declaration, the merchandise may arrive in Brazil already released, and may continue directly to the client”, explained the Treasury.

This offensive against tax evasion is part of the strategy of the Brazilian Ministry of Finance to increase collection, which has also focused on sports betting companies.
