The telephone operators Orange and MásMóvil trust in being able to “demonstrate” to the European Commission (EC) that the merger they are planning in Spain is “beneficial” both for consumers and for the telecommunications sector, by guaranteeing, as they say, the sustainable deployment of 5G and fiber.

In a joint statement sent today, both companies refer to the announcement of the EC to open a thorough investigation into the planned merger between the two.

The Commission today was concerned that the operation “may reduce competition in the retail provision of mobile and fixed broadband services, and in the offer of multiple service packages in Spain”.

Orange and MoreMobile They believe that the opening of this phase, which will conclude in August, constitutes the next step in the process with the EC, during which they will have time and the opportunity to demonstrate that this transaction is beneficial in such a competitive market.

Brussels must conclude the investigation into the effects of this merger in the next 90 working days (that is, before August 21 of this year) and determine whether its initial reservations regarding competition are confirmed.

The operation, announced in July 2022, implies a valuation of the joint company of 18.6 billion euros, of which 7.8 billion correspond to Orange (the second mobile telephone operator in Spain) and the rest to MásMóvil (fourth in the same sector). .
