Chinese authorities launched an investigation against the US semiconductor maker Microna decision that China’s foreign ministry said is aimed at “to safeguard national security”.
This announcement is an escalation in the tough trade battle between China and the United States in the field of semiconductors, with a sharpening of tensions between the two countries as a backdrop.
The decision was announced Friday by China’s industry regulator, which said it had launched a review of products sold by Micron for “national security concerns.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning told a press conference on Monday that the investigation is an ordinary regulatory measure to “protect national security”.
“Both Chinese and foreign companies operating in China must comply with laws and regulations, and must not endanger China’s national security”he added.
For its part, Micron said in a statement that it is “fully cooperating” with the Chinese authorities, according to the Bloomberg agency.
In recent years, the US authorities have tried to prevent cutting edge technology from the semiconductor sector from being exported to China by imposing specific controls on this industry. In addition, it has urged allied countries to follow suit.
The Netherlands and Japan, which are leaders in this market, recently announced new restrictions on the export of some technologies to China.
