Wagner’s boss has announced that they have taken the central quarter and Bakhmut administration after eight months of conflicts in the city. Jesús Núñez explains what he thinks this could mean for the development of the war in Ukraine.

“If that were true, nothing would happen in the development of the war because, as we have been seeing for eight months, Bakhmut, although he has become an obsession for both Prigozhin and Kyiv trying to show that there is resistance, is not a strategic objective of importance”, he assured.

Thus, I think it won’t make a change although it is important because the city has become a symbol in this conflict. However, Jesús Núñez warns that the city should not have fallen yet.

“Ukraine still maintains control of a good part of the west of the city and there has not been a full evacuation. Even if it falls into the hands of Wagner, it will help Prigozhin to increase his political weight in the internal struggle they have in the Kremlin, but it will not help him to change the course of the war,” he assured.
