“Dad, you are my hero”, That’s how it ends the emotional letter from Masha, a 13-year-old Russian girl stripped of her father for a drawing against the war in Ukraine. The little girl has been admitted to a juvenile center for a month for a drawing she did at school, where she painted missiles flying over a Russian flag towards a woman and a child who said “No to war” and “Glory to Ukraine”.

This reason was enough to take custody of his father who was investigated and placed under house arrest. However, Alexei Moskaliov escaped, and after spending two days in search and capture, has been detained in Minsk, Belarus. Finally, this week Masha’s father has been sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly discrediting the Russian Armed Forces.

The family lawyer has ensured that there is no evidence to prove his guilt. As we can see in the video that illustrates the news, the lawyer shows other drawings that Masha, from the orphanage, has sent to her father, among them the one of her dog or a letter that ends with a drawing of a heart and with the phrase: “Dad, you are my hero.”

The case has created differences even among those closest to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In fact, the head of the Wagner group has described the sentence as unjust and has asked for it to be reviewed. There have also been protests for Masha to be returned to her father at the Russian embassy in the United States and at the gate of the court where Alexei was sentenced. This is another sample of the Kremlin crackdown against all those who are against the war in Ukraine.
