Maxim Mitrofanov, Secretary General of the Russian Football Union (RFU), revealed the attitude of the European football community to the removal of Russians from international competitions. It is reported by “RB Sport”.
According to him, behind the scenes, everyone understands the unsportsmanlike nature of the decision and is in favor of the presence of Russian football on the world stage. “At none of the congresses or meetings did we meet with a position according to which the need for our return would be called into question,” Mitrofanov said.
The Secretary General of the RFU added that political pressure is exerted on national federations and international organizations. “Actually, this pressure led to such unsportsmanlike decisions,” he said.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic clubs do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
