At his first election rally, Trump compares investigations against him with “Stalinist Russia”

donald trump took advantage of his first election rally in Waco on Saturday, Texasto lash out at the prosecutors investigating him, using conspiratorial language to ignite his base ahead of next year’s Republican primaries.

Trump told supporters gathered at the Waco airport that the investigations against him are “Something straight out of the horror show of the Russia Stalinist”.

“From the beginning it has been a witch hunt and one bogus investigation after another.”, he stressed.

The legal threats that hang over the former president were in the foreground with almost no variation for the attendees, many of whom displayed signs that said “WITCH HUNT”.

Trump is under investigation by Manhattan prosecutors for campaign finance violations stemming from his alleged hush money to an adult film actress ahead of the 2016 election.

A special counsel appointed by the Justice Department is investigating allegations that Trump hoarded secret documents and masterminded a plot to overturn the 2020 election.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters in Congress, told the crowd it was time to “recover” the Department of Justice.

“You need to understand: They’re not just going after President Trump, they’re going after you, and President Trump is the only one standing in their way,” said.

Trump’s rally comes as Waco marks the 30th anniversary of a raid by federal agents on the Branch Davidians religious sect that left 86 dead, including four law enforcement officers.

Many right-wing extremists regard the raid as a seminal moment of government overreach, and critics saw the timing of the rally as a nod to Trump’s far-right supporters.

In an email, a Trump campaign spokesperson said Waco was chosen for what the former president has billed as his first major rally of the 2024 presidential race because it is situated between several major population centers and has the infrastructure to host a great event.

Trump isn’t just facing legal dangers. His effort to clinch the Republican nomination faces a potential challenge from the Florida governorRon DeSantis, amid signs that his own support is waning, at least in places like New Hampshire, a primary battleground.

The former president is trying to use the court case to unite his supporters. On Friday he issued a doomsday warning, saying the country faced a potential wave of “death and destruction” if he was charged with a crime.

The rhetorical escalation of Trump he has repelled at least some within his own party. Few supporters have heeded his calls to take to the streets to protest his possible indictment in the Manhattan case.

About 15,000 people were expected to turn out for the rally in Waco.
