The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvadecided to postpone his planned trip on Sunday to Chinato recover from mild pneumonia, the government reported this Saturday.
Lula, 77 years old, “He decided to postpone his trip to China. The postponement was communicated to the Chinese authorities”, reported the Secretary of Social Communication in a note, in which a new date was not given.
The leftist president originally intended to embark on Saturday for the Asian country but on Friday he was diagnosed with a “mild pneumonia” and delayed the trip one day, for Sunday.
His condition was stable and he was receiving medication.
But he decided to indefinitely suspend the trip after a new medical evaluation this Saturday.
“Despite the clinical improvement, the medical service of the Presidency of the Republic recommends postponing the trip to China until the viral transmission cycle ends”Dr. Ana Helena Germoglio signed a note.
During his visit to China, Lula, in power since January, sought to boost business with Brazil’s first trading partner and align himself with Xi Jinping to promote peace plans in the war in Ukraine.
His official schedule was to start on Tuesday, when he would meet Xi.
Lula’s health has been a cause for concern in recent years.
Last November, Lula, who already ruled Brazil between 2003 and 2010, underwent a procedure to remove a lesion in his larynx.
The president, who often has a hoarse voice, was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 2011 and had a tumor removed. Since then, medical results have shown complete remission of the cancer.
