As nutritionist Natalya Lazurenko explained in a conversation with Evening Moscow, the digestive process is characterized by a more active blood supply and an increase in temperature inside the gastrointestinal tract. Cold moisture consumed at such a moment lowers the temperature, which adversely affects the breakdown of food and the absorption of nutrients by the body.
“After food enters the stomach and intestines, an increased blood supply begins inside, which helps to digest food. Ice water blunts these processes, so the food will not be digested and broken down into enzymes as it should be, ”the expert noted.
The nutritionist added that it is especially harmful to drink cold drinks with meals for those who already have gastrointestinal diseases – for example, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome or other chronic disorders.
Lazurenko also said that it is better not to drink food with drinks in the form of coffee, juices, smoothies. In this case, in addition to the nutrients already received in the food, the body will receive an extra portion of carbohydrates.
