Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this Saturday a agreement with Belarus for him deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in the territory of that country, which shares border with Ukraine.
“We do not cede them. The United States does not cede them to its allies either. In principle, we do the same thing that they did for decades,” he explained on public television.
Putin has defended that said agreement does not violate existing disarmament treaties and has stated that by July 1 the construction of a silo to place said weapons in Belarus will have been completed.
He has recognized that he detonating of the ad was the UK decision to supply the Ukrainian army with depleted uranium ammunitionalthough London assures that it is not about nuclear weapons.
The Russian leader has acknowledged that the British ammunition is not considered a weapon of mass destruction, but it is a “most dangerous” weapon, especially since it creates a radioactive cloud upon impact.
In addition, Putin recalled that the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenkohad long ago requested the deployment of this type of weapon on the soil of the former Soviet republic.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Belarus of being an accomplice in Russia’s ongoing military campaign, although Lukashenko hides behind the militarization of its borders by NATO.
