Moscow and Minsk came to an agreement on the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel.
According to him, the construction of the storage facility will be completed on July 1.
At the same time, Putin emphasized that they would deploy weapons without violating obligations under the START. The President explained that the reason for such a step was the announcement of Great Britain on the supply of ammunition with depleted uranium to Ukraine. Moreover, Putin added, Minsk has long been asking to host Russian nuclear weapons.
Putin noted that although depleted uranium munitions are not classified as weapons of mass destruction, they create some radiation dust and are therefore considered very dangerous.
Earlier, British Deputy Minister of Defense Annabelle Goldie said that London, in addition to Challenger 2 tanks, plans to transfer ammunition to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium.
The British Ministry of Defense later explained that the country’s army has been using depleted uranium in its shells for “decades”. The department emphasized that this is a standard component that has nothing to do with nuclear weapons or capabilities.
Nevertheless, the UN expressed concern about the plans of London because of the harm from the use of such shells.
