Kirby recalled the joint statement issued after the meeting between Xi and Putin, where China and Russia they demanded “the end of all steps that contribute to the escalation of tension and the prolongation of hostilities”.

The American spokesman affirmed that the United States agrees with the cessation of hostilities and recalled that the way to stop them is to withdraw Russian soldiers from Ukraine and stop bombing “hospitals”.

On China’s willingness to mediate in the conflict, Kirby indicated that this country is not “impartial”, since he has not condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, he continued, Xi has not visited Ukraine or spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Russia has welcomed China’s willingness to play what it sees as a positive role in seeking a solution to “the ukrainian crisis“and the peace initiative”constructive” presented by Beijing on February 24.

In his peace proposal, China It defends, on the one hand, Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the cessation of hostilities and the resumption of negotiations and, on the other, advocates taking into account Russia’s security concerns in the face of NATO’s advance.

For his part, the vice spokesman for the State Department, Vedant Patel, reminded China during a press conference that any solution that complies with the United Nations Charter and international law must include Russian withdrawal.
