Unemployment in Brazil grows to 8.4% between November and January

Unemployment registered a rebound in Brazil to 8.4% between last November and January, after noting ten consecutive quarterly falls, according to data released this Friday by the Brazilian institute of statistics, IBGE.

The unemployment figure between November and January was higher than the 7.9% rate registered between October and December of last year, according to the IBGE, which monitors unemployment in moving quarters.

8.4% represents a total of 9 million unemployed people in the quarter ending in January, the first month of the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, against the 8.6 million unemployed registered in the last three months of 2022.

The leftist Lula da Silva assumed the presidency on January 1 with the challenge of maintaining the expansion of employment despite the expectation of a meager rate of economic growth, according to analysts.

The result released on Friday was higher than the median of 8.2% over the expectations of 28 consulting firms and financial institutions, according to a survey by the economic daily Valor.

On the other hand, the data registered between November and January showed stability in relation to the 8.3% surveyed between August and October of last year, the report detailed, at the same time that it was the lowest rate since 2015 for a quarter between November and January.

In the same period, between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, unemployment had been 11.2%, indicated the IBGE.

“There are two scenarios. In the short term there is a drop in job training, while in comparison with a year ago the scenario is still higher employment”said Adriana Beringuy, IBGE survey coordinator, in a note.

He highlighted that the sectors that lost the most jobs were agriculture, livestock, forest production, and fishing and aquaculture, with 272,000 fewer jobs, and public administration, education and health, with a decline of 342,000 jobs.

According to the report, the average income of workers increased 1.6% in the quarter, to 2,835 reais (about USD 458) compared to the three previous months, and 7.7% in the comparison against the same period of 2021.

However, 39% of the employed population, or 38.5 million people, work informally.

In the midst of the pandemic, unemployment in Brazil reached a peak of 14.7% in the first quarter of 2021.
