The EU will create military groups to deal with emergency situations at the borders

The Defense Ministers of the Twenty-seven want the plan to strengthen the EU’s military capacity to be approved in March 2022.

The European Union will work on the creation of European military groups that allow rapid intervention with up to 5,000 troops in emergency situations, including migratory crises such as the one that is taking place in recent days in the border between Belarus and Poland.

The Defense Ministers of the Twenty-seven have given this Tuesday the first go-ahead to the proposal of the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to create forces to allow a more “rapid, decisive and robust” response of the EU to crisis situations.

It is the star initiative of the new Defense of the Twenty-seven strategy, called ‘strategic compass’ and which aims to strengthen the bloc’s military capacity to increase its resistance to “threats”, promote military spending and develop security alliances with third parties.

Community partners will shape the ‘roadmap’ until its approval in March 2022 and the strategy is expected to have more concrete proposals and deadlines for implementation, as well as annual reviews by EU leaders.

Specifically, on rapid response groups, Borrell has indicated that they will serve to increase the EU’s response to “hybrid” attacks such as the one being carried out by the Alexander Lukashenko regime, whom they accuse of “pressure the EU by instrumentalizing migrants”.
