12 active outbreaks of COVID-19 reported in schools in Puerto Rico

Among the municipalities he mentioned are Caguas, a town near San Juan, and Humacao, on the southeast coast of the island.

The epidemiologist of the State of Puerto Rico, Melissa Marzán, confirmed this Tuesday that there are 12 active outbreaks of covid-19 in schools on the island.

“We have, right now, 12 active outbreaks in schools. We have them in various municipalities,” said Marzán in an interview with Radio Isla 1320.

Among the municipalities he mentioned are Caguas, a town near San Juan, and Humacao, on the southeast coast of the island.

“There are several municipalities, it is not necessarily a region. What is important is that they are all investigated, they are all in containment, which means that all the cases are isolated and their close contacts are in quarantine,” explained Marzán.

Given this, Marzán invited the parents or guardians of minors to vaccinate them against the virus, since in Puerto Rico the vaccine against covid-19 is suitable for children between 5 and 11 years old.

This move comes after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authorized the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine to be administered to children ages 5 to 11 on Tuesday.

“Children contribute to the community transmission of covid-19 and vaccinating them helps us to reduce the circulation of the virus, including the circulation of the virus in schools,” said Marzán.

In addition, Marzán explained that in the metropolitan area and municipalities in the central area of the island such as Aibonito, Barranquitas and Orocovis there were outbreaks of the virus a few weeks ago, so they reached an orange level.

The orange level implies a substantial level of risk, so it is necessary to take more restrictive measures, since there is evidence of a substantial but controlled community transmission for a sustained period of time.

According to the Puerto Rico Department of Health, 90% of eligible people (12 years or older) already have at least one dose of the vaccine in place, while 81.6% already have their dose of vaccine completed.

This makes Puerto Rico the territory of the United States with the highest numbers of inoculates.

Until this Tuesday, the local Health Department reported an average of 68 cases confirmed with molecular testing, accumulating a total of 153,012 since the first case was registered in March 2020.

Likewise, 3,257 deaths have been reported on the island from covid-19. (I)
