The UN called this Wednesday at taliban to put an end”immediately” at “draconian restrictions” that impose on women in Afghanistanwhich he described as the “most repressive country” of the world in this field, in a message in the International Women’s Day.
“Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban remains the most repressive country in the world with regard to women’s rights,” denounced in a statement Roza Otunbayeva, director of the UN assistance mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA, for its acronym in English).
“It has been heartbreaking to witness your methodical, deliberate and systematic efforts to keep Afghan women and girls out of the public sphere”he added.
Since coming to power in August 2021, the Taliban have multiplied restrictions on women. They were banned from the university and cannot access secondary education.
They also cannot travel without the company of a male relative and must cover up when leaving home.
In November, the Taliban barred their access to parks, gardens, gyms and public baths.
In Kabul, about twenty women demonstrated on Wednesday, AFP journalists found.
“The time has come for the UN to take actions that are decisive for the fate of the people,” stated one of the demonstrators during the protest.
