The European Union is working on a plan to strengthen migration policy and intends to allocate 500 million euros for the organization of humanitarian corridors for the reception of refugees. According to TASS with reference to La Stampa, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote about this in a letter to Italian Prime Minister George Meloni.
“Until 2025, we will allocate funding in the amount of at least €500 million for the organization of humanitarian corridors, providing assistance in the accommodation of about 50 thousand people,” wrote von der Leyen.
She announced that migration policy issues would be discussed at the next EU summit at the end of March. The head of the EC noted that “the migration problem is extremely complex” and acknowledged that it is not easy to find “radical and comprehensive solutions.” Von der Leyen pointed to the need to work in three areas: strengthening cooperation with partner countries, preventing uncontrolled and illegal sailings and providing assistance at sea; providing assistance to those who really need and are entitled to international protection, saving them from turning to criminal groups; greater coordination of aid in the Mediterranean.
This message came in response to a letter sent earlier to the EC by Meloni, in which the Italian prime minister warned of the risk of unprecedented migratory pressure and pointed out the need for a pan-European approach to solving the problem.
