The oil used to anoint the King Charles III at his coronation is one of the most mystical moments of the ceremony.
On May 6, the son of Queen Elizabeth II has searched for an oil that emits his sensitivity towards animals, since the mixture will not include an ingredient from animals.
In its earlier versions, civet oil, from the glands of some mammals, and ambergris, from whales, were included.
Animal cruelty has raised concerns and in the end a formula of holy oil without any animal origin was decided.
What does the new oil have?
This new amber includes olive oil scented with a blend of essential oils, sesame, rose, jasmine, cinnamon, neroli, and benzoin.
It also has meaning for the royal family, since it partly uses olives grown on the Mount of Olives, the monastery where the king’s grandmother, Princess Alice, is buried.
“This demonstrates the deep historical link between the coronation, the Bible and the Holy Land,” noted Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.
It should be noted that this anointing in oil is a tradition that has been present in the British monarchy for several years.
