The Greek Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Konstantinos Karamanlis, has resigned in response to the collision of two trains in the north of the country which has resulted in at least 40 deaths.
Karamanlis has explained that he considers it a “duty” to remove himself from office, as “a small gesture of respect” to people who have died “unfairly”. In this sense, he has assumed in first person “responsibility for the deficiencies of the State and the Greek political system for years.”
“When something so terrible happens, we cannot continue to act as if nothing had happened”he said, hours after the two trains, one for goods and the other for passengers with some 350 people on board, collided head-on when they were traveling on the same track near Larisa.
“I believe that the trust placed by the citizens in the political system is an essential part of democracy“, added the outgoing minister, in a note collected by local media and disseminated by Karamanlis after visiting the scene.
