Western countries, led by the United States, are pushing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to stop exports to Russia of a number of critical electronic components that can be used in the creation of weapons systems, the Financial Times writes, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
Diplomats from the US, EU and UK have visited the UAE in recent weeks, the sources said, with the intention of “clarifying a wide range of their trade restrictions and putting pressure on UAE officials” to restrict exports to Russia.
Sources say the US is concerned about Abu Dhabi’s central role in supplying Moscow with critical goods, in particular electronic components. At the same time, Washington is particularly concerned about re-exports, when Western goods are sent through the UAE, bypassing restrictions, FT interlocutors emphasized.
As the newspaper notes, the Western allies, in addition to the requirement to stop the export of electronic components, demand to disclose the list of goods that have already been delivered to Russia.
The United Arab Emirates did not impose sanctions against Moscow, but spoke out against the Russian-led special operation and urged the parties to return to the negotiating table. In addition, the UAE provides financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
