Nestlé withdraws from Burma due to economic situation after coup

The Swiss agri-food giant Nestlé will abandon its production in Myanmar, a spokesman for the group said Monday, as other foreign companies have done since the February 2021 coup.

Because of the “current economic situation”, the factory that has nestle in Rangoon and the headquarters of the group “they will cease their activity”, a spokesman told AFP, without specifying any date.

According to the source, a Burmese company would instead market and distribute Nestlé products in Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Myanmar has been left in chaos since the 2021 coup in which the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown. The repression of dissent by the army led to fighting in several regions of the country.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in the crackdown since the army took over the country, and more than 19,000 have been detained, according to a local monitoring group.

The Swiss group had a turnover of about 95.6 billion euros ($101.2 billion) worldwide in 2022.
