The 6.3 and 6.4 tremors were felt in the neighboring provinces of Fars, Kerman, Bushehr, and in the Kish and Qeshm islands, as well as in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai.
At least one person died and eight others were injured in two earthquakes measuring 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter scale that struck southern Iran today, where some areas have been left without electricity and telephones.
The earthquakes occurred in the early afternoon in southern Iran, with an epicenter in Hormozgan province, and caused hundreds of people to take to the streets.
At least five aftershocks, the largest of them 4.5 degrees, occurred in the hours following the initial tremors.
So far there have been one death and eight injuries due to the fall of a lamp post in the city of Bandar Abas, capital of Hormozgan, reported Fateme Nouruzian, a spokeswoman for the province’s University of Medical Sciences.
“It was horrible, two earthquakes in a row. Four poles have fallen only in our area and others in the Suru neighborhood, people are scared and in the streets,” Ebrahim Yalali, a neighbor of Bandar Abas, told Efe.
As a result of the tremors, the electricity and the telephone have been cut off in some areas of this city.
The tremors were felt in the neighboring provinces of Fars, Kerman, Bushehr, and in the Kish and Qeshm islands, as well as in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisí ordered First Vice President Mohamad Mojber to travel to Bandar Abas to monitor the situation.
Iran has a strong seismic activity since the country is located on the boundary of several tectonic plates and is crossed by several faults.
In November 2017, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed 620 people and injured more than 12,000 in the northwestern province of Kermanshah, while in December 2003 nearly 30,000 people perished in another in the southern town of Bam. EFE
