james duchspokesman for the European Parliament, believes that the war in Ukraine, “if it has to end in a just way, can only end with the total withdrawal of the invading troops, the Russian troops, who are in a territory that does not correspond to them”.
Interviewed by Arantza Ruiz, director of EITB News, in the space ‘12 minutes‘ from ETB2, the spokesman for the European Parliament has assured that “Ukrainians, logically, have every right in the world to defend their territorial integrity.”
In the words of the Catalan spokesman, “unfortunately the war seems to be going to be long because it does not give the impression that Putin and the Kremlin have understood that they have entered a dead end road.” In addition, he considers that it is “an unjust war, a dirty war, a particularly cruel war.”
In this sense, he has assured that war crimes have occurred. “This Parliament, here in Brussels, has voted for a resolution accusing Russia, precisely, of being a terrorist statethat is to say, of being a state that has completely broken with all the rules, with all the ways in which up to now one state could confront another,” he said. “We hope that one day this will have consequences, that a special court judge those who have committed these crimes or those who have ordered them,” he added.
Duch has stressed that it is “very difficult to know what will happen” in the conflict. “Two days before the invasion there were still many people, including governments, denying the possibility that this invasion would take place,” she recalled. “In the end it happened, in fact, it took place on a date that had been more or less predicted by some,” he said.
Finally, regarding the possibility that Russia deepens the war escalationthe spokesman for the European Parliament hopes that “they are just rumors, and that the Russians do not make the added mistake of putting more pressure back and, therefore, generating more victims, more deaths, more destruction, to try to mark their own ground a year after the invasion”.
