The Biden Administration announces a policy that limits access to asylum from the border with Mexico

The government of Joe Biden announced last Tuesday a policy that will limit the figure of asylum for migrants who want to enter the country through the border with Mexico without authorization.

Through a statement, USA He noted that this is a proposed rule by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to encourage the use of new and existing legal processes. Thus, a new condition is placed on asylum so as not to encourage dangerous border crossings.

In this way, migrants who do not use the available routes to go to the United States or who do not seek humanitarian refuge in another country through which they have passed on their way to the United States, will not be considered applicants for asylum, thus will impose a five-year re-entry ban on them.

“We are a nation of immigrants and we are a nation of laws. We are strengthening the availability of legal and orderly pathways for migrants to come to the United States.”said the Secretary of State for National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

In this sense, he commented that with said proposal “People given a safe, orderly, and legal path to the US are less likely to risk their lives at the hands of ruthless traffickers.”

It should be noted that the new proposal will not take effect immediately, but will go through a regulatory process to be discussed for 30 days. After said time, it will be in force for the following two years.
